Testimonial
From A.H. suffering from severe
swelling in my extremities, depression, fatigue, and severe
menstrual cramping due to endometriosis.
I am a 29-year-old teacher and have been suffering from severe
swelling in my extremities. Ankles, feet, fingers, wrists, for more
than five years, at one point the swelling became so bad that none
of my shoes in my closet fit and walking became a struggle. I seeked
help from six different medical doctors in El Paso and Houston but
no diagnosis was ever given. I was finally told by the last doctor
(in Houston) that the swelling was just how my body was aging and to
just accept it. There were many times were I felt as if I was going
crazy and that perhaps I was just making the swelling up.
I definitely did not like that diagnosis so I seeked advise from my
long time acupuncturist in El Paso. He advised me to seek an
acupuncturist in Houston, and this lead me to Jo-Mei Chiang, I would
always pass by her clinic on my way to Barnes and Noble. I have to
honestly say that she has been a true godsend. I began treatment in
late July 2004 and now I can say that the swelling is about 90%
gone. She has also shed the light on other health and emotional
issues that I have been dealing with for a very long time; I am
learning how they have a direct correlation to the swelling. Mrs.
Chiang is teaching me how everything is connected and how ones
health does not stand-alone. I am very grateful to meeting Jo-Mei
and to her caring bedside manner. She has given me much hope.
The role Endometriosis plays in
Infertility
What Is Endometriosis?
Before we can explain the role of Endometriosis
can play in becoming infertile, we must first explain what it is.
Endometriosis takes its name from the
endometrium, the layer of cells lining the uterus (womb).
Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the
endometrium appears at various locations outside the uterus. The
disease may be found in nearby organs such as the ovaries, the
bladder, and the intestine, and in some cases it may be present
throughout the pelvic region.
Although endometriosis involves an abnormal
growth of tissue, it is usually not cancerous. What makes
endometriosis an abnormality is not the tissue itself but its
location outside the uterus. Inside the uterus, endometrial tissue
helps nourish a developing fetus during pregnancy. In non-pregnant
women, it is expelled during menstruation.
We have learned that according to some
estimates, up to 30 percent of women of reproductive age may have
endometriosis! The cause of endometriosis is not known.
- One theory is that during menstruation some
of the menstrual tissue backs up through the Fallopian tubes,
implants itself in the abdomen, and grows there.
- Another suggests that the endometrial tissue
is distributed from the uterus to other parts of the body through
the lymphatic system or the bloodstream.
- A genetic theory suggests that endometriosis
may be carried in the genes of certain families or that certain
women may have factors predisposing them to it. Others blame
toxins and dioxins in our polluted environment.
We were told that every case of endometriosis
is different. The location of the implants, the depth to which they
penetrate the tissue and their overall size contribute to the unique
nature of the disease. We have also learned that even the tiniest
implant can cause incapacitating pain if it irritates surrounding
nerves.
However, endometrial tissue outside the uterus
has no way of leaving the body. The result is Some other
complications, depending on the location of the implants, can be
the
- formation of scar tissue or adhesions, that
may cause obstruction of fallopian tubes and blockage of egg
release form ovaries.
- intestinal bleeding or obstruction,
- interference with bladder function, and
- rupture of implants, which can spread the
disease. Symptoms may worsen with time, though
- hormone imbalance- cycles of remission and
recurrence are the pattern in some cases. or increase the rate of
miscarriage.
Pain
is the most major symptom:
-
severe menstrual cramps
-
pelvic pain apart from menses
-
low back pain, backache
-
painful intercourse
-
painful bowel movements
-
fatigue
-
bloating
-
constipation
-
menstrual diarrhea
-
pain with exercise
-
painful pelvic exams
-
frequent urination with pain.
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine
effectively treat Endometriosis
In Chinese medicine blood stasis is the
man syndrome of endometriosis. At the first onset it
belongs to excessive type, after a prolonged period, the syndrome
becomes a mix of excessive and deficient. Absolute deficient
syndromes is hardly seen.
The differentiation of syndromes are according
to the onset time, nature and location of the syndromes, the changes
of menstrual cycle, quantity, color, texture, etc, to decide the
cause.
- Qi stagnation and blood stasis
caused by emotional stress, anger, anxiety depression, etc. result
the stasis in the urterus.
- Coagulation of cold and blood stasis
caused by the invasion of cold
weather, cold drink or malnutrition, etc. during the menstruation
or post delivery period.
- Kidney deficiency and blood stasis
caused by lack nourishment and
circulation of kidney due to deficiency of constitution, or
improper sexual life.
- Qi deficiency and blood stasis
caused by chronic emotional
stress, prolonged chronic illness, damage of surgery.
- Heat stagnation and blood stasis
caused by Liver Qi stagnation,
invasion of pathogenic heat, too much spicy food, or side effect
of medications.
All the above generates excessive heat inside
of the body and thicken the blood, causing stasis and obstruction of
the uterus, and Ren and Chong meridians which are the major
meridians to nourish female reproductive organs.
The disadvantage of conventional therapy:
1.hormone medication therapy – Usually prevent
or stop ovarian activity and shot down ovulation. The main purpose
of medication is not getting rid of endometriosis but relief the
symptoms. The common side effects are weight gain, irregular
bleeding, bloating.
2.Surgery- high recurrence rate and generate
more scar tissue or adhesion that often cause more pain later.
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine therapy is a
holistic and effective approach to treat ednometirosis. The reasons
for a serious alternative consideration are:
1. regulate hormone, acupuncture and
Chinese medicine enhance the circulation and resolve the stasis in
the reproductive organs
2. eliminate symptoms, acupuncture and
Chinese medicine increases the blood flow to the pelvic region to
reduce imflamation and pain.
3. dissolve and eliminate masses of
ednometriosis- acupuncture and Chinese medicine could break and
reduce and stasis to diminish the endometriosis.
4. relieve stress- creating positive
thinking and increasing energy level.
5. improve immune system – acupuncture
and Chinese medicine increase the whole body flow and reduce the
obstruction improve the function of organs, increase the internal
harmony, help the fertility condition.
Since endometriosis is a hormonal and immune
system disease, there are other things besides medication that help
the body find its balance.
Adjusting diet by including more fresh
vegetables and plenty of fruits as well as vitamins and herbs and
reducing caffeine, sugar and aspartame intake are largely
beneficial.
Exercising more, and devoting more time to rest
aid in the balancing of your system which helps the acupuncture
treatments more effectively.
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine for
Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a term given to a disease
where tissues that act like the lining of the uterus; the
endometrium, grows outside of the uterus. Endometrium like tissue
can grow in distant organs, such as the lungs, stomach, intestines
etc. These most commonly appears near the reproductive organs.
Endometriosis usually occurs in women between the ages of 20 to 50.
Endometriosis is a commonly seen gynecology
disease. The main clinical symptoms are menstruation pain,
irregular menstruation, spotting between menstruation, and
infertility, etc.
According to the major clinical symptoms,
Chinese medicine categorized the endometriosis into dysmenorrhea,
infertility, irregular menstruation cycle, menstrual pain and
cramping.
In Chinese medicine the main cause of
endometriosis usually is that the blood stasis obstructs the uterus,
Ren and Chong meridians. The blood stasis is due to deficient organ
functions, or Qi and blood impairment, or the invasion of exterior
pathogens.
Etiology and Pathogenesis:
In Chinese medicine blood stasis is the
man syndrome of endometriosis. At the first onset it
belongs to excessive type, after a prolonged period, the syndrome
becomes a mix of excessive and deficient. Absolute deficient
syndromes is hardly seen.
The differentiation of syndromes are according
to the onset time, nature and location of the syndromes, the changes
of menstrual cycle, quantity, color, texture, etc, to decide the
cause.
1. Qi stagnation and blood stasis:
Emotional factors, such anger, sadness,
depression, anxiety, etc, impairs the liver function. Obstructed
liver qi and blood cause the blood stasis in the uterus and Ren and
Chong meridians.
2. Coagulation of cold and blood
stasis:
Invasion of pathogenic cold in the uterus
during menstruation, or after delivery. Such as drinking ice cold
water or swimming in cold water, not having enough rest after
delivery, or not having the right diet, etc. during the menstruation
and post delivery period.
3. Kidney deficiency and blood stasis:
Constitutionally kidney deficient, or abused
sexual life, or frequent pregnancy, or frequent delivery, or
frequent or improper abortion damages the kidney yang Qi. Lack of
the nourishment and circulation of kidney yang Qi, blood stasis
occurs in the uterus, as well as the Ren and Chong meridians.
4. Qi deficiency and blood stasis:
Constitutionally the function of spleen and
stomach is deficient, or due to chronic emotional stress, or
Prolonged chronic illness or severe illness or surgery, depleting Qi
and blood, and causing poor circulation of Qi and blood. Without
efficient circulation of Qi and blood, the stasis won’t be cleared.
The stasis stay in the uterus and Ren and Chong meridians. Chronic
conditions also damage the functions of the spleen and stomach. With
the deficiency of spleen, the excessive dampness generates and forms
phlegm. The combination of damp phlegm and blood stasis, stays and
block the functions of uterus, and Ren and Chong meridians.
5. Heat stagnation and blood stasis:
Constitutionally excessive of Yang Qi, or
emotional stress damage the liver function and generate the heat, or
invasion of external heat pathogen, or frequent consumption of spicy
foods, or side effect of taking medicine;
All the above generates excessive heat inside
of the body and thicken the blood, causing stasis and obstruction of
the uterus, and Ren and Chong meridians.
Diagnosis:
1. In secondary dysmenorrhea conditions, about
40% patients accompanied with infertility.
2. Lower abdominal pain appears 1 to 2 days
before the menstrual cycle. The symptoms increases in severity in
the first day of the menstrual cycle, then gradually relieved after
the menstruation cycle. The region of pain usually is in the lower
abdomen and lumbar area, radiating down to the vagina, perineum,
anus and medial side of the legs. Sometimes the menstrual cycle
could be earlier or delayed, also increased menorrhea, painful
intercourse, spotting between cycles.
3. Gynecological examination could find
retroversion of the uterus, painful hard nodules can be found on the
posterior uterine wall and uterosacral ligament Painful cystic mass
could be felt beside the uterus.
4. Ultrasound and peritoneoscopy are the
necessary examinations for accurate diagnosis.
Differentiation of syndromes:
1. Qi stagnation and blood
stasis:
Severe lower abdominal pain during or after
menstruation. Color of menstruation is dark with clots. Abdominal
pain usually relieved after clots are out. Tenderness and pain in
the breast area, dry mouth and constipation. Irritability and
depressed emotion. Tongue color is dark with ecchymosis, pulse is
taut.
2. Coagulation of cold and
blood stasis:
Severe lower abdominal pain before or during
menstruation. Pain could be alleviated by heat, stuffiness in
chest, tenderness in the breasts, nausea. Scanty menorrhea, with
blood clots. Menstruation cycle is irregular and spotting occurs
between periods. Difficult to get pregnant, aversion to cold, loose
stool, pale, poor circulation with cold extremities. Tongue color
is purplish with white coating, pulse is deep and tight.
3.
Kidney deficiency and blood stasis:
Lower abdominal pain, achy and weak in the low
back region during or after the menstruation. Infertility, vertigo,
dizziness, tinnitus, fatigue, darker complexion, poor sexual
appetite. Tongue color is dull with white coating, pulse is deep
and thin.
4. Qi deficiency and blood stasis:
Lower abdominal pain during menstruation,
menstruation with dark color and blood clots. Distended feeling at
the anal area, fatigue, poor appetite, diarrhea. Tongue color is
light with white coating, pulse is thin.
5. Heat stagnation and blood stasis:
Burning pain in lower abdomen, aggravated by
pressing, fever, menstruation cycle is shorter, heavy menstruation
with thick texture and blood clots, and spotting between the
periods. Irritable, yellowish urine, some constipation. Tongue
color is red with yellow coating, pulse is taut and rapid.
